Each Sunday in September, as our denomination (ELCA) celebrates 25 years as a church body, we at Salem focus on different ministries of the ELCA. This coming Sunday, Sept. 22, we remember Global Mission — here at home and beyond. Our special guest is Pastor Pedro Suárez, Director for Evangelical Mission in our Gulf Coast Synod. He preaches at both services and will have a presentation in the Parish Hall during the education hour (9:30-10:30 a.m.).
Pastor Suárez was born and raised in Venezuela. He attended Seminario Evangélico Asociado in Maracay, Venezuela and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He has served St. Mary’s Hope Lutheran Church in Chicago , St. Francis Lutheran Church in Aurora, IL, St. Andrew’s Lutheran in West Chicago and Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison, WI. He developed Latino ministries at most of these congregations. Pedro has also served on synod staff at the South Central Synod of Wisconsin as Mission Director.
Pastor Suárez is fluent in English, Spanish, and Papiamentu (the language of the Netherlands Antilles) and understands and speaks some Portuguese. He is a musician, a liturgist, is passionate about evangelism and brings gifts as a Lutheran bicultural leader. Pastor Suarez and his wife Aura have two adult children, Rafael and Melinda.
