Congregational Forum

The time to make a weighty decision about Salem’s future is nearing. Three forums have already been held. We have heard various options for the congregation and about Pastor Marvin’s new call. We have listened to one another in small groups and Brother Chris from the synod. We have gained needed information and asked clarifying questions.

The Council, in consultation with Pastor Beth Marie Halvorsen, is offering one more opportunity on sunday May 21, following worship, before Council prepares a recommendation followed by the congregation making the ultimate decision. So, what is distinctive about yet another gathering?

Instead of focusing on information, this forum will concentrate on our formation. Using Centered Flexibility, Pastor Beth will introduce a spiritual foundation, which will serve as a framework for our participation. Using four Jesus virtues, we will:
♣ become even more aware of ourselves and others (thoughts, feelings, concerns, dreams)
♣ embody gratitude, even amid grief and uncertainty
♣ ensure that our collective values will be reflected in our process and decisions
♣ ask how best to serve the people of God in this time and place
♣ recognize that some “unknowns” will unfold only over time
♣ ensure that all voices are heard
♣ gain a sense of the Holy Spirit guiding our process

Can we handle the messiness and mystery of making this significant decision? Yes, with the help of God. We pray that we can live into whatever decision is made with peace, gratitude, hope, and grace.
